Queensland claim overall honours

Thursday, October 02, 2008

Bribie Island sensation Carly Griffiths has led Queensland to a famous overall victory at the Australian Junior Championships in Halekulani today.

With the race to be crowned the nation’s best going down to the wire, Griffiths’ 21-8 triumph in the final of the girls’ singles allowed the Maroons to claim 11 crucial points, handing them a narrow overall victory against fierce rivals NSW and Western Australia, who were hot on their heals.

During an enthralling final day at the national championships, Queensland also captured the boys’ title, edging out NSW on a count back, while Western Australia claimed the girls’ trophy on the back of its gold medal performance in the fours.

The talking point at Halekulani, however, was Queensland’s overall win.

With Victoria’s Ben McArthur and Dylan Fisher causing an upset earlier this morning by accounting for defending champions Jay Cross and Paul Petersen in the final of the boys’ pairs, Queensland desperately needed an injection of points and that’s exactly what Griffiths provided.

Squaring off against South Australia’s Breeanna Dickson, the 15-year-old rising star cruised to a comfortable win, but admitted her nerves almost got the better of her.

"I was so nervous after the roll-up and through the start of the game, especially when she caught up to me at 4-4," a clearly ecstatic Griffiths said after the final of the girls’ singles.

"I was shaking that end and I was one down in the head, but luckily I trailed the jack with my last bowl and made four."

In the play-off for bronze, Melissa Solly capped off a fine week by accounting for NSW’s Louren Katague to help propel her state to the girls’ trophy.

With Jaime-Lee Gale, Kelli Rogalski, Kristina Krstic and Sheynade Heldt bowling superbly, WA was able to post a 16-13 victory against the Victorian combination of Michelle Dick, Elise Cowan, Alexandra Smith and Lisa Phillips.

In the boys’ triples, Sam Pryor, Kyle Johannes and Matt McIntyre forced a count back for the boys’ title following their 22-7 victory against Queensland’s Andrew Szalkowski, Mitchell Percy and Sam White in the gold medal match.

With both states locked on 36-points apiece, the Maroons narrowly prevailed on games won, edging their way past NSW by the smallest of margins.

Tasmania’s Matthew Mitchell, Joshua Baker and Tom Mitchell defeated Victoria’s Aaron Wilson, Chris Ball and Matthew Rennex for the play-off for third.
